Happy Fall!! And much more...

We sent this message to ICTE's Facebook Group today:

Happy Fall, shana tova (good year), back to school, and all other seasons greetings!

It's going to be quite an academic year, and we are excited to move forward with you into it.

The 'next big thing' is the second annual Transgender Awareness Week -- culminating in the international Transgender Day of Remembrance on Saturday, November 20th -- organized by MTPC (Mass. Trans. Political Coalition).

That same week the Massachusetts Department of Public Health is hosting a suicide prevention training for clergy.

QPR is a basic training which teaches people to become "gatekeepers" (people in social circles who are likely to notice when individuals might be suicidal). This training is backed up by research, and provides real interventions which a lay person can use to have conversations and get people the help they need. It's highly recommended by an ICTE supporter who knows about such things, and points out that the MA DPH has done a lot of good work on transgender suicide prevention. The training is not free, but there may be financial assistance available and we encourage you to enquire about that. The week of Monday September 6th was National Suicide Prevention Week.

"Hello Everyone,
We are hosting a QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Certification Training for Clergy on November 17th, 2010 in Worcester. A description of the training and registration link with more information is below. Please circulate widely to your networks.
Description
This certification course trains instructors to teach QPR for Suicide Prevention in their community. Participants first learn about the nature of suicidal communications, what forms these communications take and how they may be used as the stimulus for QPR intervention. To gain perspective, participants are introduced to the history of suicide, suicide prevention and the spectrum of modern day public health suicide prevention education efforts. The history, background and research support for QPR are reviewed. Participants then learn to market QPR, target potential gatekeepers, and how to teach the QPR curriculum. Participants also learn to deal with pent up audience demand to talk about suicide, survivor issues and how to make immediate interventions and referrals. Each participant has the opportunity for individual rehearsal and practice.
