THURS JAN 17 - ACTION DAY @ Statehouse for TRANS BILL

Save the Date: January 17 is Action Day at the State House for Transgender Equal Access

MTPC and the Transgender Equal Rights Coalition will be holding a Community Action Day at the Massachusetts State HouseThursday, January 17th at 11 am in the suite 167 conference room. All transgender people and our allies are encouraged to attend and meet with their legislators to ask for co-sponsorship for the Equal Access to Public Accommodations (bill title and number to be assigned in early Jan.).

MTPC and the Transgender Civil Rights Coalition are committed to getting public accommodations protections for our transgender youth, adults, and families. The final version of the 2011 Act Relative to Gender Identity, originally filed as Transgender Equal Rights Bill, passed by the legislature did not include protections within public accommodations section of the nondiscrimination laws.

This will be our first Community Action to educate legislators about the necessity of protections in public accommodations, which is any establishment, public or private, that is open to the general public and provides, or endeavors to provide, some goods and/or services to the general public.

Examples of public accommodations are: health care facilities, including medical and dental offices, hospitals; public transit and bus stations; hotels, motels, campsites; restaurants, bars, nightclubs; retail establishments; theaters, concert halls, sports arenas; convention centers; museums, libraries; parks and zoos; public streets, highways, sidewalks, boardwalks, and other public ways.

Transgender youth and adults encounter unfair treatment, denial of services, mocking or hostile language, and threats of harm far too often when accessing these public services. This is our chance to step up and tell our legislators that we need these protections! If you cannot join us for the Community Action Day, please write a letter to your legislator. And if you are unable to write and mail a letter in, please take a few minutes and send an email.

Join us anytime between 11 am and 1 pm at the Massachusetts State House, suite 167 conference room. Please RSVP at http://www.masstpc.org/take-action/current-legislation so we can look up your legislators prior to the event.
