MTPC's Executive Director search - full "ad" now available!

Dear ICTE:

The Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition (MTPC), the go-to transgender advocacy and education organization in Massachusetts, offers an extraordinary opportunity for a new executive leader to partner with its talented Steering Committee, staff and volunteers.  By attracting and mobilizing the under-utilized talents and skills of the transgender community, MTPC has increased the visibility of transgender people and built a vibrant and supportive transgender and allied community across the state.  MTPC is small, powerful, nimble and ready for its next stage of evolution.

The ED will report to the Steering Committee and is responsible for programming and fundraising, as well as financial and administrative management of the organization. MTPC’s new leader will be expected to play a strong, visible and strategic role in developing and implementing plans to promote growth, impact and long-term sustainability.

MTPC is spreading the word about this opportunity as widely as possible.  Please share this information to those in your network who should be aware of this opportunity.  For the complete position profile and application guidelines, please visit http://www.tsne.org/jobs/ed_ma_transgndr_poli_coalition/

We thank you so much for your assistance in getting the word out.  If you know of someone whom I should contact directly, please don’t hesitate to let me know.  Your involvement in outreach can have a big impact on MTPC’s future!

429 Magazine seeks trans stories

"LGBT community and allies,

Hi--

My name is Jane, I am a reporter from 429Magazine (an LGBT magazine) based in San Francisco. I cover any and all transgender news and stories and am currently working on two different pieces.

I am calling for submissions of stories of transition: stories of people who identify as transgender and/or transexual and would like to tell their story--any aspect of it.   I am hoping to collect enough stories, with the intention of eventually writing a book based on a series of transgender stories. I am looking for any and all transgender stories which transcend age, race, and class, in hopes of writing a book which celebrates: transition, ambiguity, change, difference, and self-awareness. Written submissions are welcome, and/or an interview can be arranged.

Additionally, I am writing a separate piece on transgender business owners, with the idea in mind of writing a series of profiles on the owners and their organizations.

If you or someone you know would like to participate in one or both of these projects please reply to this email or feel free to call me.

Thank you in advance for your help. Can't wait to hear your stories!
(Please forward this to anyone who may have a story!)

Best wishes,

Coming Home: Portraits of Jewish Women - call for participants

Nu, so you know how we need more visibility re: trans Jewish (aka Trewish) women?  Well, does Yishay Garbasz have news for you!

“Coming Home: Portraits of Jewish Women” is a multimedia art project about Jewishness, transgender, and love. The project will present gender also beyond the standard male/female binary and will look at the intersection between Jewishness and gender in women. I am looking for participants for the project in Boston and NYC.

As an artist and a woman with a transgender history, I am looking for role models and other trans women to learn from. I am taking pictures of Jewish women who are also transgender and gender non-conforming. Two of my concerns with the project are inclusivity and visibility. In order not to “other” my subjects, I would like to include family members and/or partner(s) in the photographs. In this way, I will depict the web of connections each person has rather than isolating individuals, thereby giving visibility without creating spectacle.

When I was growing up, there were no role models for me of Jewish women with a gender that was not binary. If I had had someone to look up to or someone to ask, perhaps my journey would have been easier as an individual. However, I believe that the wider a community’s base, the more stable the community is. By showing images of Jewish women who are also transgender, I am shedding light on the fact that the Jewish community is richer than we expect. Presenting these individuals in the context of relationships that are familiar to us is the first step toward creating a larger, more diverse Jewish community.

I am looking for participants for the project who are willing to be photographed and have their photographs exhibited in an art gallery. Please contact me if you are interested, and please pass this along to other women that might be interested.

I live and work in Berlin and will be doing a residency at the Women’s Studies Research Center at Brandeis University during April 2013. I will be taking pictures during the first 2-3 weeks of April in/around Boston but can also travel to New York City for a few days to take pictures. I have exhibited my work around the world, and you can learn more about my artwork at www.yishay.com.

Pride At Work's Trans Month Of Action

Today being March 1st, it’s the first day of Pride at Work’s Trans Month Of Action for trans-inclusive healthcare -- a national campaign focusing on 10 cities, in partnership with SEIU National Lavender Caucus, National Center for Transgender Equality, and Transgender Law Center. And one of the faith connections is that Donna Cartwright, co-chair of P@W’s Transgender Caucus, is also in leadership at TransEpiscopal.

Trans Month of Action

On behalf of the Pride at Work, in collaboration with SEIU Lavender Caucus, the National Center for Transgender Equality, and the Transgender Law Center, we are writing you to invite you to join in our historic campaign to educate and organize for Transgender Health Benefits within the Labor movement.  During the month of March, our organizations are partnering to launch events in ten cities across the country. Local organizing committees of union and transgender community members will ask unions, labor councils and state federations to pledge to bargain for trans-inclusive health benefits and to sign a Trans Health Benefits Bargaining pledge form.

At the NGLTF Creating Change Conference in Atlanta last month, Pride at Work and SEIU Lavender Caucus leaders consulted with transgender leaders from across the country who are working on the transgender health benefits issue, and concluded that we should  focus on moving trans health benefits within the labor community.

This new campaign already has strong, deep support in the transgender community and from LGBT union members.  During this campaign, we will identify additional transgender activists around the country and create a network, collect stories from transgender folks and allies in targeted regions, and develop leadership capacity and member involvement in Pride at Work Chapters and Lavender Caucuses.
Please let us know if you would like to join in our actions by filling out this form

All the best,
Donna Cartwright and Gabriel Haaland
Co-Chairs of the Transgender Caucus, Pride at Work

TRANS FAITH LEADERS NEEDED FOR SLIDESHOW! SUBMISSIONS DUE WED!

From Rev. Megan Rohrer:

"Hey friends-

I'm helping to coordinate a project with Ross Murray at GLAAD and some other faithful trans folk and we would like to invite you to opt-in or nominate others to appear in a slide show of transgender faith leaders for the Huffington Post. We have a quick turnaround time for this project, so we need your response by Wednesday, January 30th.

We hope to include as much diversity as possible, including people from the full gender spectrum, so feel free to self identify in your bio.  We have also chosen to use the term faith leader in order to encourage submissions from a wider range of transgender faith leaders.  Please note that it may take a long time to edit or there may be limited ability to change biographies in the future, but since we are being given the rare opportunity to use our own identifiers and choose our own photos, hopefully we will be happier with the result of the slide show.
If you are interested, please email to megan@welcomeministry.org:
1) a high resolution photo that you own the rights to
2) A biography statement of that is minimally one sentence, but no more than 150 characters [sample included below].
3) the names (and email addresses f you have it) for other transgender faith leaders you think should be included or will help us represent a fuller diversity of our community

If you are interested, but do not have time to find a photo or write a bio please let me know and we'll do our best to compile sometime from online information and send it to you to proof or edit.

If there is any reason you would not like your name and photo to appear in a slideshow, please let me know and I'll do my best to ensure you are not included even if others nominate you.
Please forward this request to other transgender faith leaders that you think should be included or that you would like to check in with to see if they are interested in being included.
Thank you in advance for your participation!
Megan Rohrer

New Book - "Hung Jury: Testimonies of Genital Surgery by Transsexual Men" - editor Trystan Theosophus Cotten

Pictured are ICTE's Rev. David Weekley and Deborah Weekley, outside of the Massachusetts Statehouse on Action Day for Transgender Equal Access (Thursday January 17th; photo by journalist Becky Garrison).

The Weekleys moved here to Massachusetts from Oregon last fall for David to attend Boston University's School of Theology; David and Deborah's writings are among those in "Hung Jury", and David and editor Trystan Cotten will be presenting about genital surgery at the local First Event conference later this month.

David's autobiography "In from the Wilderness (Sherman: She-r-man)", with a foreword by Virginia Ramey Mollenkott, was published in 2011 by Wipf & Stock -- click here for more information; there is also a publisher's flyer available as a PDF.

New Book Release

Hung Jury: Testimonies of Genital Surgery by Transsexual Men
Edited by Trystan Theosophus Cotten

Hung Jury is the first book of personal testimonies focusing exclusively on genital surgery of female-to-male trans bodies. Stories document the intricacies, ups and downs of genital surgery and the many transformative ways it changes transsexual men's lives. These journeys of courage, risk, trial and triumph speak to readers of all walks of life. Testimonies are a valuable companion for those considering genital surgery and will educate others who want to learn more about female-to-male gender transitions. Clinicians, therapists, and partners of trans men will also gain insight into a dimension of transitioning that is rarely discussed and learn how to support them in their quest.

http://www.amazon.com/Hung-Jury-Testimonies-Genital-Transsexual/dp/0615692354/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357161074&sr=8-1&keywords=hung+jury%3A+testimonies+of+genital+surgery+by+transsexual+men

"Genital surgery for transsexual men provides an initiation to manhood that is risk filled, physically daunting and transformational. These deeply personal, often contemplative essays both reveal and inform readers of the many levels of transformation taking place on this path. Any reader can intuitively grasp the importance of these surgeries, which heal at an acute intersection of identity and technology."

THURS JAN 17 - ACTION DAY @ Statehouse for TRANS BILL

Save the Date: January 17 is Action Day at the State House for Transgender Equal Access

MTPC and the Transgender Equal Rights Coalition will be holding a Community Action Day at the Massachusetts State HouseThursday, January 17th at 11 am in the suite 167 conference room. All transgender people and our allies are encouraged to attend and meet with their legislators to ask for co-sponsorship for the Equal Access to Public Accommodations (bill title and number to be assigned in early Jan.).

MTPC and the Transgender Civil Rights Coalition are committed to getting public accommodations protections for our transgender youth, adults, and families. The final version of the 2011 Act Relative to Gender Identity, originally filed as Transgender Equal Rights Bill, passed by the legislature did not include protections within public accommodations section of the nondiscrimination laws.

This will be our first Community Action to educate legislators about the necessity of protections in public accommodations, which is any establishment, public or private, that is open to the general public and provides, or endeavors to provide, some goods and/or services to the general public.

Examples of public accommodations are: health care facilities, including medical and dental offices, hospitals; public transit and bus stations; hotels, motels, campsites; restaurants, bars, nightclubs; retail establishments; theaters, concert halls, sports arenas; convention centers; museums, libraries; parks and zoos; public streets, highways, sidewalks, boardwalks, and other public ways.

Transgender youth and adults encounter unfair treatment, denial of services, mocking or hostile language, and threats of harm far too often when accessing these public services. This is our chance to step up and tell our legislators that we need these protections! If you cannot join us for the Community Action Day, please write a letter to your legislator. And if you are unable to write and mail a letter in, please take a few minutes and send an email.

Join us anytime between 11 am and 1 pm at the Massachusetts State House, suite 167 conference room. Please RSVP at http://www.masstpc.org/take-action/current-legislation so we can look up your legislators prior to the event.

MTPC's Interfaith Committee update ~ September 2012

Happy Fall, Interfaithfull!

The Massachusetts Trans Political Coalition is still planning to file a public accommodations bill in January, and we are increasingly excited about organizing the interfaith campaign to support it.  Next year's faith campaign will probably be a lot like last year's – the biggest thing being a 2nd Trans Faith Action Week in the Spring (read about the 1st TFAW, April 2010:  http://interfaithcoalition.blogspot.com/search?q=transgender+faith+action+week).

In the meantime, here’s how faith communities can get involved:

  • Be part of the Fall (and Winter) conferences --
  • Participate in MTPC's 4th annual Trans Awareness Week (Monday November 12th through Monday November 19th) – including Trans Day of Remembrance (the international Day is Tuesday November 20th, Boston’s observance is Sunday  November 18th at 4:00 -- at the Cathedral Church of Saint Paul (Episcopal) for the 3rd year in a row).  And please let us know what you’re planning so that we can add it to our publicity (http://www.masstpc.org/events/trans-awareness-week/)!
  • Share, use and submit faith-based video stories to MTPC's I AM: Trans People Speak project – we would love to have more trans people and allies of faith, both clergy and laypeople (http://www.transpeoplespeak.org/).
  • Stay tuned as we create trans and allied interfaith discussion / social support groups.
  • Help us improve and share our page on MTPC’s new website, coming soon.
  • Stay up to date with us online --
